Siberia
Siberia
was a Battle Honour granted to Canadian units serving in
northeastern Russia in 1918-19.
Background
Following the
communist revolution in Russian in 1917, the victorious Bolshevik
(Communist) forces successfully sued for peace with Germany. The
Allies, still fighting in western and southern Europe, feared that
German forces would benefit from the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk by
access to Russian natural resources such as grain, minerals, and
oil, in effect negating the Allied blockade. While the Allies
debated the merits of intervening militarily in Russia, the Germans
demanded that a force of Czechs previously fighting for the Russians
be disarmed. Instead, the Czechs seized the trans-Siberian railway
with the intent of travelling via Vladivostok to the Western Front.
The United States assembled an international force of American,
British and Japanese units to intervene in Siberia and protect these
Czechs. Sir Robert Borden, Prime Minister of Canada, agreed to
participate and the
Canadian Expeditionary Force (Siberia) was created under
Major-General J.H. Elmsley. The force took the form of a brigade
with two infantry battalions, a squadron of cavalry, and companies
of engineers and machine guns. In all, the force comprised 3,800
Canadians who sailed to Siberia in October 1918, and returned to
Canada in June 1919. The force did not see widespread action but
suffered 24 casualties.1
