United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission

United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission (UNIKOM) was a United Nations observer mission involving Canadians.

UN Mandate

To monitor the demilitarized zone on the Iraq-Kuwait frontier (10 km into Iraq and 5 km into Kuwait), to remove unexploded ordnance and to clear mines.

Canadian Military Involvement

Units involved included:

  • 1 Combat Engineer Regiment
  • 59 Field Squadron of 5 Combat Engineer Regiment
  • 29 Field Squadron of 2 Combat Engineer Regiment

Insignia

Ninety days service with the mission after 3 Apr 1991 entitled a Canadian serviceman to the UNIKOM Medal. The ribbon was sand with a central 4mm stripe in UN blue.

A total of 523 awards to Canadians were made during the following months:

  • Apr 1991 - 300
  • Oct 1991 - 88
  • Apr 1992 - 85
  • Oct 1992 - 45
  • Apr 1993 - 5
