United Nations India-Pakistan Observer Mission

United Nations India-Pakistan Observer Mission (UNIPOM) was a United Nations observer mission involving Canadians in 1965-66.

UN Mandate

Following clashes between Indian and Pakistani regular troops from Apr to Sept 1965 which eventually spread to Kashmir, the UN Security Council established the mission to ensure supervision of the cease-fire and the withdrawal of armed personnel from the Rann of Kutch to Kashmir, a 1,000-mile segment of the western border between India and Pakistan. Following a following a peace conference at Tashkent in Feb 1966, the two armies withdrew and UNIPOM was disbanded the next month.

Canadian Military Involvement

Canada provided 3 Caribou and 3 Otter aircraft from 117 (RCAF) Air Transport Unit, based at Lahore, Pakistan.

Insignia

Ninety days service entitled a Canadian soldier to the UNIPOM Medal, between 22 Sep 1965 and 24 Mar 1966. The ribbon was the same as for the UNMOGIP Medal, with a dark green 4mm centre merging outwards through shades of lighter green to white with an abrupt break in UN blue 4mm on the edges.

There were 112 awards of the medal to Canadians.
