United Nations Observer Group in Lebanon

United Nations Observer Group in Lebanon (UNOGIL) was an observer mission involving Canadians between in 1958.

UN Mandate

In 1958, the president of Lebanon, worried about internal problems between Christian and Moslem inhabitants as well as the external threat of invasion by the United Arab Republic (Egypt and Syria), requested the UN Security Council to send an Observer Group to Lebanon. UNOGIL headquarters was established in Beirut, with 49 observer posts created throughout Lebanon. Peak strength of the mission was 591 soldiers of whom 77 were Canadian. The crisis ended after six months with the intervention of 14,000 US soldiers and the the election of a new Lebanese president in Jul 1958.

Canadian Military Involvement

No specific units were deployed to this operation and 77 individuals served from various units.

Insignia

Thirty days service were required between 11 Jun 1958 and 9 Dec 1958 to qualify for the UNOGIL Medal. The ribbon was UN blue with a narrow 2 mm white stripe 6 mm from each edge (this was the as ribbon as for the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization Medal.

Canadians received 77 of the 591 medals issued.
