United Nations Support Mission in Haiti

The United Nations Support Mission in Haiti (UNSMIH) was a United Nations peacekeeping mission conducted from Jul 1996 to Jul 1997 in which Canadian soldiers participated.

Mandate

The mandate of UNSMIH was to maintain a secure and stable environment, to support the Government in the professionalization and training of the Haitian National Police and to support the role of the Special Representative to the Secretary General in coordinating the activities of the UN agencies to promote institution-building, national reconciliation and economic rehabilitation. Canada provided civilian police and up to 750 military personnel to UNSMIH, including an infantry battalion, an aviation unit, an engineering company and security personnel (Operations STANDARD and STABLE).

Insignia

One single medal/ribbon combination was given for the various Haiti missions. The colour combination for the ribbon consisted of the royal blue and red of the Republic of Haiti, bordered by the UN blue with two white lines denoting friendship between the two.
