Non-Commissioned Officers A Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) was a member of the Canadian Army not holding a commission, holding the rank of Corporal, Sergeant, or Staff Sergeant, or who had been appointed Lance Corporal, Master Corporal, or Lance Sergeant.Non-commissioned officers are considered the junior management of an army; the Canadian military, and its model, the British Army, relied on experienced NCOs to complement the Commissioned Officers in their tasks of leadership and administration. Historically, there have been two categories of NCO; Junior Non-Commissioned Officers (Jr NCOs) and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (Sr NCOs). After the deletion of the rank of Staff Sergeant following Unification, the latter category consisted of only one rank, that of Sergeant.
