A "sub-unit" was a
component of a unit, generally about 100 or soldiers in strength. A
sub-unit generally had an Officer Commanding (OC) rather than a
Commanding Officer.
Examples:
Artillery Regiment:
composed of sub-units called "Batteries".
Batteries were
composed of sub-units called Troops.
Armoured Regiment:
composed of sub-units called "Squadrons".
Squadrons were
composed of sub-units called Troops.
Cavalry Regiment:
composed of sub-units called "Squadrons".
Squadrons were

Infantry Battalion:
composed of sub-units called "Companies".
Companies were
composed of sub-units called Platoons.
