Lieutenant Colonel is a rank with a long history in the Canadian
Army.
Insignia
The insignia for a lieutenant colonel before Unification was one
rank star with a rank crown above. After Unification, the insignia
was changed to three wide rows of rank braid.

Responsibilities
Lieutenant colonel was the standard working rank for the Commanding
Officer (C.O.) of units, i.e. infantry battalions or equivalent in
other branches.
Forms
of Address
Lieutenant colonels were addressed by rank and name; thereafter by
subordinates as "Sir" or "Ma'am".
