History
The Regiment was
created in 1968 the Canadian Forces increased its efforts to be
truly bilingual, giving Canada its first Regular Force francophone
armoured unit. The new regiment was based in Valcartier.
At the same time, Le Régiment de Trois-Rivières (RCAC) was
redesignated as a Militia component of the regiment. This unit,
formerly known as The Three Rivers Regiment, dated back to 1862,
based in Trois-Rivières which is a town midway from Montreal to
Quebec City.
The number in the regimental title commemorates The Three Rivers
Regiment's title during the Second World War when it was officially
known as the "12th Armoured Regiment (The Three Rivers Regiment)".
The Canadian Army traditionally avoided having city or region names
in the titles of its Regular Force regiments.
The official regimental short title is "12e RBC".
