The 252nd
Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force was a unit
raised for service in the First World War.
History
The 252nd Battalion, CEF was
raised in Lindsay, Ontario, from recruits in Military
District 3 (Victoria/Haliburton Counties).1
Official authorization to form the battalion was published
in General Order 11/17 dated 1 February 1917.2
The unit began forming in
September 1916 and had a brass band; the commanding officer
was Lieutenant-Colonel J.J. Glass. The unit contributed a
draft of one officer and 71 other ranks to the 253rd
Battalion.
The battalion embarked at
Halifax, Nova Scotia on S.S. Olympic for the United
Kingdom on 2 June 1917, and disembarked in England on 9 June
1917 with a strength of 6 officers and 127 other ranks. The
unit was absorbed by the 6th Canadian Reserve Battalion the
next day, 10 June 1917.
The unit officially disbanded by
authority of Privy Council Order 2342 dated 1 September
1917. 3
The battalion was perpetuated
after the war by The Victoria and Halliburton Regiment
following the reorganizations of the Otter Committee. That
regiment was disbanded on 12 December 1936 and converted to
artillery.4
