Glossary - A

Army - (a word which comes to English from the French armée) can in a general sense refer to any armed force. In Canadian usage, it generally refers to a land force of the military. In a more strict usage, Army refers to a military formation, comprising one or more corps. Canada has only ever raised one army, the First Canadian Army, which was in existence from 1942 to 1945.


Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General (AA & QMG)- a staff officer, generally at a Division headquarters. He was assistant to the Colonel AQ, who was the head of "A" (administration) and "Q" (logistic) staffs. The AA & QMG was usually ranked as a Lieutenant Colonel.
