Site History

canadiansoldiers.com was established in 1998 as the "Canuck Website", tying in with the webmaster's first book which had been published in 1996. Originally hosted at http://www.nucleus.com/madorosh/ the site offered short information articles on topics of interest regarding the Canadian Army overseas in the Second World War.

As the site grew, extensions were added beyond the 10 Mb hosting limitation at the webmaster's free space, through several free web hosting sites which were ad-driven.  A web forum was added in 1999 and was immediately a success, drawing collectors and history buffs from around the world to participate. As of May 2007, over 4,700 separate message threads (individual message postings have never been counted) are archived on the site. Many messages of limited interest have been deleted over the years so there is no count of the all time total number of messages.

The site moved to a dedicated domain name, collecting all the individual pages together on one server. The format shown at right was solidified by 2005. The software used to administer the site has been FrontPage98 from inception. As the site grew, the administrative demands also increased, and research into a better way to update the site resulted in a trial of the Mediawiki software that is used to run Wikipedia in late 2005.

As of 1 January 2006, canadiansoldiers.com was host to 6732 separate images on 545 separate information pages, with a considerable backlog of information by contributors not yet uploaded. On that date, a new format based on the Mediawiki software was established.

  • 05 Mar 2006: 1,300 images, 300 new pages had been uploaded to the new format.
  • 19 Mar 2006: 2,241 images, 417 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

  • 08 Apr 2006: 2,782 images, 508 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

  • 22 May 2006: 3,117 images, 608 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

  • 09 Jul 2006: 3,760 images, 731 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

  • 20 Aug 2006: 3,868 images, 808 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

  • 30 Oct 2006: 4,333 images, 949 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

  • 13 Jan 2007: 4,546 images, 1,016 pages had been uploaded to the new format.

On 1 May 2007 the page count of just the new wiki style site was 1,027, with approximately 4,546 images. Just under 1,000,000 page views had been made of the new content pages. Several pages still existed in the older format, and so content was scatted across two formats.

On 1 May 2007, the current format was established. The installation of FrontPage 2003 aided in the administration of the site.

On 1 October 2007, the current layout and colour scheme was adopted. Re-institution of content from the old site has been slow. A major push in the Christmas holiday season of 2011 has helped populate a number of categories.
