Sub-Unit

A "sub-unit" was a component of a unit, generally about 100 or soldiers in strength. A sub-unit generally had an Officer Commanding (OC) rather than a Commanding Officer.

Examples:

  • Artillery Regiment: composed of sub-units called "Batteries".

    • Batteries were composed of sub-units called Troops.

  • Armoured Regiment: composed of sub-units called "Squadrons".

    • Squadrons were composed of sub-units called Troops.

  • Cavalry Regiment: composed of sub-units called "Squadrons".

    • Squadrons were composed of sub-units called Troops.

  • Infantry Battalion: composed of sub-units called "Companies".

    • Companies were composed of sub-units called Platoons.

      • Platoons were composed of sub-units called Sections.
