Minister of Militia and DefenceThe Minister of Militia and Defence was a politician within the Cabinet of Canada responsible for the Department of Militia and Defence which oversaw Canada's land forces. In general, he was an elected official and Member of Parliament. Until 1923, this position was the equal of the Minister of the Naval Service and Minister of Aviation (created following the rise of airpower in the First World War). In 1923 the three positions were merged into a single Minister of National Defence. He was assisted by a Deputy Minister and Deputy Assistant Minister, as well as the "Militia Council".
In 1923 the National Defence Act merged the post of Minister of Militia and Defence with the Minister of the Naval Service and Minister of Aviation. |
