The 248th
Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force was a unit
raised for service in the First World War.
History
The Battalion was raised in Grey
County, Ontario, with headquarters in Owen Sound.1
Major J.H. Rorke, a graduate of the McGill University
Officers' Training Corps, was promoted to lieutenant-colonel
and commanded the battalion.2 The unit had brass
and bugle bands while in Canada. The battalion sailed to the
United Kingdom on S.S. Olympic on 2 June 1917 with 13
officers and 259 men and disembarked on 9 June, and was
absorbed by the 8th Canadian Reserve Battalion the same day.3
The unit received drafts from
the 31st Grey Regiment and was perpetuated by The Grey
Regiment after the Otter Commission reorganization. When The
Grey Regiment and the Simcoe Foresters amalgamated in 1936,
that unit continued the perpetuation.4 |
