United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala

United Nations Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) was a United Nations observer mission involving Canadians.

UN Mandate

In Sep 1994, the General Assembly decided to establish a Human Rights Verification in Guatemala acting on a recommendation by the Secretary-General that such a mission could make a contribution to a persisting pattern of human rights abuse. MINUGUA was established by Security Council Resolution 1094 (1997) to verify the Definitive Cease-Fire Agreement signed on 4 Dec 1996. The mission terminated in May 1997.

Canadian Military Involvement

Canada provided civilian police and 15 Spanish-speaking UN Military Observers to this mission between Feb and May 1997 (Operation VISION).

Insignia

Ninety days service with the mission between 1 Sep 1994 to 27 May 1997 entitled a Canadian soldier to the MINUGUA Medal. The ribbon represented the colours of the Guatemala flag (deep blue, white and green) brought together in the center by UN blue.
