United Nations Transition Assistance Group

United Nations Transition Assistance Group (Namibia) (UNTAG) was a United Nations peacekeeping mission involving Canadians in 1989.

UN Mandate

UNTAG was to supervise the orderly transfer of authority over Namibia from the Republic of South Africa to an independent Namibian government and to supervise the Nov 1989 elections.

Canadian Military Involvement

89 Canadian Logistic Unit and other elements of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (arrived Sep 1989)
100 RCMP officers arrived Oct 1989

Insignia

Ninety days service with the mission between 1 Apr 1989 and 31 Mar 1990 entitled a Canadian serviceman to the UNTAG Medal. The ribbon was sand with the 8mm edges in UN blue; in the centre of the 18mm central sand stripe were five 1mm stripes: black, yellow, red, green, and blue.

There were 117 401 awards to Canadians; 301 to Canadian Forces members in 1989 and 100 to RCMP personnel.
