United Nations Temporary Executive Authority

The United Nations Temporary Executive Authority in West New Guinea (UNTEA) (also known as United Nations Security Force (UNSF)) was a United Nations peacekeeping mission involving Canadians.

UN Mandate

After an Indonesian attack on West New Guinea, a mediation plan was set up to allow the United Nations to administer West New Guinea for eight months. The mandate ended with West New Guinea becoming a province of Indonesia.

Canadian Military Involvement

Two Otters aircraft from 116 (RCAF) Air Transport Unit with 12 RCAF personnel were used to support the operation. There was one other Canadian observer.

Insignia

Ninety days service anytime between 1 Oct 1962 and 31 May 1963 qualified a Canadian serviceman for the UNTEA Medal. The ribbon was dull blue, with three 3mm central stripes in dark green, white, and light green. Of the 1,500 medals issued, only 13 went to Canadians.
