United Nations Military Observer Group in India and PakistanThe United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was a peacekeeping mission involving Canadians from 20 Jan 1948 to 20 January 1979. UN MandateUNMOGIP was established in 1948 to observe the cease-fire line and determine violations between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir area. Canadian Military InvolvementIn addition to Canadian Army observers (up to 39 were involved in the mission at any one time), an air force detachment provided aircraft to this mission. Originally, the 102 RCAF Kashmir Unit provided Caribou aircraft, later this was changed to the CC-130 Hercules. Canada continued to provide aircraft twice a year to move the UNMOGIP headquarters between Strinagar, India and Rawalipindi, Pakistan until 1996 though no personnel were permanently assigned to the mission after 1979.
