United Nations Emergency Force, Middle East

United Nations Emergency Force, Middle East (UNEFME, also called UNEF II) was a United Nations peacekeeping mission involving Canadians from 1973 to 1979.

UN Mandate

Following the Yom Kippur War in Oct 1973 between Israel, Egypt and Syria, UNEFME was created to ensure that the terms of the cease-fire were followed.

Canadian Military Involvement

  • 73 Signals Squadron

  • 73 Service Battalion

  • 1st Canadian Signal Regiment

  • 116 Air Transportation Unit (2 Buffalo aircraft)

  • Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry

There were 1,145 CF members on duty at one time.

Insignia

Ninety days service entitled a Canadian soldier to the UNEFME Medal, between 26 Oct 1973 and 24 Jul 1979. The ribbon was sand yellow with two 1mm dark blue stripes in the centre with 9mm UN blue selvedges.

There were 111,500 awards of the medal to Canadians.
