United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization

United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization (UNTSO) was a peacekeeping mission involving Canadians from 1948 into the 21st Century.

UN Mandate

UNTSO was established to to observe and maintain the cease-fire and general armistice agreements between Israel, Egypt, Lebanon and Syria, following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Headquartered in Jerusalem, the mission provided UN military observers (UNMOs) from several nations to patrol the Sinai buffer zone as well as man observation posts in the Golan Heights; the Canadian officers worked in Egypt, Israel and Syria. Other duties included observation posts on the Lebanese-Israeli border, inspection of limited forces, armament areas and missile-restricted zones in the Sinai Desert.

Canadian Military Involvement

No specific units were deployed to this operation. Some 20 Canadian officers was the standard number beginning in Feb 1954, with tours normally lasting one year. The number of officers was reduced to 13 in 1993.

Insignia
