United Nations Assistance Mission in RwandaUnited Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) was a United Nations observer mission involving Canadians.UN Mandate UNAMIR was established by Security Council Resolution 872 (1993) of 5 Oct 1993 to monitor the cease-fire, security situation, process of repatriation of refugees, to assist with mine clearance, the coordination of humanitarian assistance and to contribute to the security of the city of Kigali. UNAMIR also contributed to the security of personnel of the International Tribunal for Rwanda and of human rights offices in Rwanda and assisted in the establishment and training of a now, integrated national police force. The UNAMIR mandate came to end in Mar 1996. Canadian Military Involvement Major General Romeo Dallaire, CD of Canada was in command of the original 450 member multi-national contingent. An original force of 450 members from several nations was expanded to 5,500, including 300 Canadians, and given a six month mandate in June 1994 to set up zones to protect refugees fleeing the fighting, as well as the protection of relief convoys. The contingent was not mandated to use force was to to stop the fighting. Canada participated in UNAMIR from Dec 1993 to Feb 1996, providing a logistics support unit of up to 112 Canadian Forces personnel at any given time. Insignia
